World music lovers rejoice, it’s the 3rd annual World Music Festival at Ironwood Hall, September 12-13. The event actually begins Friday evening, September 11 with Day One of the Texas World Culture Conference and kick-off party at 6:30 PM. To attend, RSVP to Eventbrite for free entry. Day Two of the Conference will be Saturday morning at 8:30 AM, with the Music Festival beginning at 5:00 PM Saturday evening. Sunday’s continuation of the Festival begins at 3:30 PM.
This year’s headliner for the World Music Festival is the “Jimmy Hendrix of the Sahara”, Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Toure. The Festival has expanded and added the Jazz Fusion Festival as well, featuring Billy Cobham, drummer, and guitarist Scott Henderson and bands. The Festival will feature some local bands also. The organizer of the Festival, Jakes Srinivasan describes the Festival as focused around the concept of international peace and times the event with the U.N.’s International Day of Peace. He believes “global music lends itself to issues of global significance”. Portions of the proceeds go to organizations helping refugees.
